Director Martin Campbell's "Green Lantern" adaptation may be almost a year away, but Warner Brothers and DC clearly seem to think it will be one of their next major franchises.
Variety is reporting that Warner Brothers has already started to move forward on the sequel and has hired Michael Goldenberg to write "Green Lantern 2." Goldenberg is a playwright who has also written screenplays for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Contact," "Peter Pan" and "Where The Wild Things Are." Goldenberg also did a rewrite for the first "Green Lantern" movie, which recently wrapped production in Louisiana.
Back in June, Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim — the original "Green Lantern" screenwriters — were hired by Warner Brothers to write outlines for both "Green Lantern 2" and "The Flash" with an option to write the script for one of those films.
During a recent interview, Berlanti indicated that the trio had already moved on to the script for "The Flash."
Over the last few months, there have been several hints that "Green Lantern 2" was on the fast track. In May, Temuera Morrison stated that he might return in a sequel as Abin Sur during a flashback sequence while Mark Strong has recently said that the next "Green Lantern" film will depict the "fall of Sinestro."
Prior to Comic-Con, Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first image of Ryan Reynolds in costume as Hal Jordan.
"Green Lantern" will shine its way into theaters June 17, 2011.
