Most people wouldn't steal food here, but if violent hoarding can be considered 'looting', then I would say the possibility is high under similar circumstances. By 'violent hoarding' I mean disrespecting one-per-customer policies and cutting in lines whilst armed with a shotgun. People here are easily freaked out by the crisis-loving media (don't get me started about the swine flu in 2009), and we have very liberal laws on firearms compared to the rest of Europe.

In that situation I would exempt food from the looting category and possibly most consumer items for that matter. It's not like stores were abandoned and being robbed. When everything is washed away and strewn about and you are reduced to a survival situation then I see no problem with it even if the food was sitting in an undamaged store. Survival is survival. Leave them an IOU. ;)

No Woodcrest arcoss the board in the Mac Pros? BOO HOO!!! I hope the new monitor rumor is true. I am eyeing up a nice 23" monitor to go along with my new (Woodcrest based?) Mac Pro.There was never any logic to using Woodcrest across the board - only for the Quad. Conroe is just as fast and cheaper for dual core models. :)I don't really like the idea of the macpro line-up having different chips.

I know in order to produce a quad lineup.. they'll have to, and it makes little difference to the end user.... but the idea of using "lesser" chips in the low end model bugs me.Conroe are not "lesser" than Woodcrest. Where did you get that idea? Using one Woodcrest for two core Macs would be a higher manufacturing expense which would translate into more expensive dual core Mac Pros.

Yeah, the 11 is such an adorable machine, it's just so hard to resist :p

but again, i think the only let down is the SSD and Battery Power, that's the only thing i think the 13 truly have the advantage over the 11 one

because SD Card slot can be resolved with a single usb sd adapter which i think should be okay if you truly want to own the 11 inch

This isn't really all that shocking to be honest. The costs of new tech are always higher at first, but when a big player finally pushes it, the prices drop dramatically.

Stream worked well for me - h.264 goodness all the way through - although it did stop a few times, pausing and restarting fixed that.

I changed my homepage to the Apple events last night, and forced myself not to look at any other web pages before I watched the whole stream. It would be like watching "the making of" a movie before watching the actual thing.
The surprises were much more exciting to watch the stream first :)
I'm actually really happy with what we saw, and that guy "Scott" who shared the feature demos with Steve was a very good speaker and presenter - perhaps Steve's sucessor?

Now now, calling Budweiser a beer is a stretch as it is and calling it a lager is an insult to any properly brewed lager out there. Like someone else in this thread stated before it's a cheap diluted ricewine with hops added for something pretending to be taste. As for Chimay, never had it but if it is in the same range of products as that .... stuff.... from Anheusser operates in, it probably isn't a belgium ale either.....
    Cheers,

    Ahmed

Chimay is made by Belgian monks. I used it as an example precisely because it is not nearly in the same range as Budweiser. ;)

I unplugged everything, closed any applications, and repaired permissions before running the update on my MacBook CD 2.0Ghz.
It updated successfully, no problems at all... It runs at the same temperature as before...

The 750 HD option is on the Mac Pro as well as the 24" iMac. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they changed the layout on several of their store pages too.

I have two concerns for Cond Nast's iPad publications.

    1) They are big and appears to be in image files, not htmls. They may look beautiful on iPad/iPad2 but what will happen when we have a retina screen iPad3? It'll be 1/4 the original size, scaling will make it look ugly.

    2) Price, one look at the comments under the app and you'll know. $4.99 per issue is blatant robbery. I remember they said they were working on a subscription model and we don't see it coming. We have The Daily, and we have Bloomberg Businessweek, both of which have a very reasonable subscription price, and none of them get bloated up to 100+ MiB per issue.

The first issue of Wired on iPad sold pretty well but obviously there aren't that many who would pay for that on a regular basis.

I really really wish they could release a New Yorker app like that of Bloomberg Businessweek, and at the same time offer a reasonable subscription model. It really is a great mag.

Perhaps, but do you think it'll stay this way? Electricity can be generated cleanly. I don't see why we need to put a stopper on progress elsewhere just because we have more work to do in how we generate electricity.

Despite "high hopes" for going green, the current reality of this is that about 45% of a U.S. Volt owners will be using a coal-powered car.

Do you folks actually believe that U.S. "coal barons" are willing to roll over and die? Anyone who believe that is naive. The coal industry is willing to spend millions or perhaps billions to defeat any bill that they see as being "anti-coal", which includes not only cap and trade but any environmental related bill that tightens regulations on mining or burning coal.

It's really very simple -- if the country's coal barons have their way, the use coal-generated power will increase, not decrease, in coming years. In most coal-producing states, it's extremely easy to whip-up support for coal -- they simply raise the "they want to take your jobs" issue.

Unfortunately, I live in the heart of Appalachia (http://blog.mywonderfulworld.org/2010/11/jessie-hodal---mountaintop-coal-mining-appalachia.html), where there are currently more signs and bumper stickers of the "Friends of Coal" kind than there are of the "Honk if you love Jesus" variety. This pro-coal group produces pro-coal literature (http://climateprogress.org/2009/11/07/let’s-learn-about-coal-industry-front-group-distributes-coloring-book-on-the-advantages-of-coal/) currently being used in the local K12 school system that "teaches" kids that coal is clean and cheap, and is an abundant energy source that shouldn't be abandoned.

    How is that ?

I just sold my PowerBook and I'm temporarily on an IBM ThinkPad T42. Untill I get my new 20" iMac (this Saturday) ;)

To be honest. That ThinkPad has an amazing build quality compared to my TiBook. It doesn't feel like it's going to break all the time.

Everything I have read about the NAB event was that it was strictly about FCP and nothing else. Just because the dont talk about the rest of the suite doesnt mean anything one way or the other. Apple specifically said to Jim Dalrimple of the Loop insight that they were focusing on FCP in this event...Yep it was an Final Cut Pro Users Group meeting :)
It was my first and I tell yaa it was crazy.

So these results are VERY impressive for the iPhone

    Thanks for the answer

Is there a reason why they're sticking with mobile RAM and GPU? Is it part of some Eco power saving strategy, or is there a different reason?

Mobile DDR3 1.3ghz is the same speed, and will bench the same as Desktop DDR3 1.3ghz. The only difference between desktop ram and mobile ram is that desktop ram can reach speeds higher than 1.3ghz and can be over clocked. While Mobile ram takes awhile to reach higher speeds (It wasn't until 2010 where mobile DDR3 reached 1.3ghz) and the dimms are smaller, and cost more for their smaller size. Speed wise, if they are listed the same speed, both will bench the same.

Apple using mobile GPU's is simply because of heat/speed/power ratio. Even a 27 inch iMac couldn't take the heat generation of a Nvidia 470/570/580, let alone fit a power supply that can provide enough power to feed those beasts. Mobile GPU generally provide excellent performance with less heat output and power requirements. Until high end desktop video cards start becoming single slot solutions again and finally tackle heat generation and power needs, Apple will most likely continue to only put mobile GPU's in iMacs.

As so many other posters, the fact is that you have no idea what transpired. The driver is prima facie guilty of attempted murder. Nothing more needs to be said. I do not understand the number of otherwise reasonable people here who are blaming the victim.

Then get out of the thread is nothing more is to be said. However...

Both should be thrown in jail and left to rot. Unfortunately there's no law against stupid so only the guy will get his day in court.

Modern society as done away with the concept of personal responsibility in such a bad way that now people like Skunk and others are just saying "victim" instead of calling it like it is : Lack of judgment. You don't jump on the hood of the car of a man/woman trying to leave in anger. At that point, all bets are off and if you do think you're going to manage to stop him you're an idiot and you deserve the bodily harm you suffer if any.

That doesn't excuse the person who will harm you, but it shouldn't excuse you from putting yourself in such a dangerous situation either.

Looks like I'll be making a stop at the AT&T store before work on the 24th. It's stupid that they are prohibiting employees from buying it when we won't get the phones till that morning anyway, and its not like Best Buy loses money off employees since I have to pay the exact same as everyone else.

    Whatever
