    Woah. Here's something I haven't seen mentioned -

The 10th Anniversary iPod Touch: a 220gb iPod Touch. It's an iPod touch with the storage of an iPod Classic. Or rather, an iPod Classic with the interface of an iPod Touch.

    Discuss.

Perhaps, though I suspect for some people, the MAS will be the only way they interact with apps on the Mac.

Let's hope it doesn't give Apple any ideas. You know... lowest common denominator ideas... :(

Didn't the Persian supply corridor factor into the soviets being able to hold off the Germans?

As did the supply ships making their way to Murmansk. Many merchant marines lost their lives on that run.

Current Mac computers running on Intel Chipset, Running OS X then dashboard with emulating Apple A4 Processor. As all macs nearly have 4GB of ram 512MB taken out for dashboard isn't bad when you quit said dashboard it stops emulating A4 and 512MB The iMac can be touchscreen. The Other macs can operate iOS4 with it's either mouse or remember the rumor for the trackpad media device. They could operate iOS4 on Mac minis and Mac Pros with that device and for the MacBooks operate it on the magic trackpad

Hi everyone, I just recently purchased an Ipod Touch 4G to replace my aging 1G, and have decided to buy a case to help protect my investment (to resell at a later time) this time to avoid the massive damage my 1G went through (long story...it's not pretty anymore, but hey, it does work).

    My requirements are as follows:

-It MUST protect the glass on the front if it were to fall face-down onto a hard surface. Now, I'm not expecting miracles here, but it has to offer some protection for this (if you're wondering, this is what happened to my 1G...).

-It must protect the back from scratches and whatnot, but I assume most cases do this by default...

-It must not compromise any ports/buttons at all.

-It must not be too bulky.

-This isn't a major thing, but I'd like to be able to open it up without too much of a hassle if the need arises.

-I'm looking to spend between $20-25 at most.

Right now, I've narrowed it down to the Griffen Reveal, Switcheasy Colors, and the iFrogz Luxe due to their overall positive reputations. Does anyone have any thoughts on the above 3? Does anyone have any other recommendations that I missed? Thanks.
Griffin Reveal seems nice, plus very customizable. Switcheasy Colors, i love Switcheasy, but the silicone, I just don't like silicone. The Luxe is probably the same protection as the Griffin.

Out of the three, I would suggest the Griffin.

I am waiting for something else from Switcheasy, maybe a TRIM or Rebel.

"rare"? In what part of the world are they "rare"?

While I was looking for a new car maybe less then a year ago, and I asked the salesman if they had any manuals on the lot. He replied by telling me yes they do, and we got in a car that had paddle shifters on the steering wheel. I told him this is not a manual car, and he was obviously old enough to remember that a manual car has a "shifter" sticking out of the center, and usually a clutch pedal.

So after that he explained to me that, "All the new cars are like this, there are no more manuals." I looked at him and said um, "I can order one online with a manual, without these paddles. So what do you meant they don't make them anymore?"

I was greeted by another salesman when I got back from the test drive. When he asked me how I enjoyed the car, I asked him the same question, about when would they have a manual model on the lot. He said, "We don't stock those here sorry, but you can order it online and have it shipped here for pick up if you like."

I ended up going to another dealer, who didn't try to tell me, " There are no more stick shift cars." I don't know when they will be trying to phase out the manual car, but it does seem that they are less desirable in places.

However here are some more facts about manual cars:

They are less expensive new then automatics by about $500 - $1000.

They are cheaper to maintain and replace then automatics.

Car dealers and salesmen make less commission on the sale of a manual car because it costs less. ( The paddle shifters, and the sport mode is an option on most cars and is more then the regular automatic transmission)

You can get better gas mileage with a manual car vs an automatic.

Blah, it should read "Mac OS X Leopard, introducing Panter 2.0"

    Panther?

Let me steer this off topic real quick. I have read before that Apple has two OS teams so "in theory" Leopard would, in fact, be Panther 2.0 and 10.7 would be Tiger 2.0. Again, in theory… Can someone clear that up?

    On topic: Hooray Leopard!

Tuesday is rapidly approaching. However, for some of us, the time and space continum is slightly different than the rest. Tuesday will come and some of us will sit in front of our computers waiting in anticipation for that Apple store to go down and "be right back". We will feel like little children waiting in line for Disneyland, waiting to cross that magical gate.

    What?!

    :)

Just don't stay up all night waiting. (I want to be the first person to order the damned thing).

Just in time for the back to school promo!

Which is about a month away. I wonder how many buyers on the fence for this refresh will have the patience to wait even longer for the promotion.

Oh, and that's right, Lion should also be out in about 1-2 months after that as well. ;)

What I mean is that I would get the $499 model but BTO it with a superdrive. A $549 model so to speak.

We'll see. If the low end becomes a dual 1.66 I'm getting one.You know what the difference in cost is between a Combo Drive and a Superdrive?

    About $5

I am confused why you use the word IF? This report confirms it has already happened (http://www.hardmac.com/news/2006-08-31/#5869) - unless you think Apple made a mistake fulfilling his order for a 1.5GHz CS by putting a 1.66GHz CD BTO in a CS box? That is next to impossably unlikely.

All we need is one more report like above to corroborate this is a fact. I wonder how long before the rumor sites put it out as a fact.

WE HAVE CONFIRMATION (NOT):I posted this on the mini specs forum, but thought it would be needed here as well.
    Are they already shipping then?

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2010Oops. It's the same reported source not confirmation.

They have obviously run out of their last shipment of Core Solo Yonahs and received their new supply of 1.66GHz CDs for that part of the mini assembly lines. I guess marketing is behind the curve on this one. Perhaps so as many Solo Units can get flushed off the shelves before they ADMIT THIS CHANGE. That wouold explain why Fry's is now ADVERTISING 1.5GHz Core Solo minis for $499. IE the buyers have been notified already and told to dump all the Core Solos ASAP since the replacement 1.66GHz Core Duos are in transit to the srores.

The picture remains confused. We know that coalition military units are lobbing precision guided munitions at Gaddafi's air defense network as well as attacking targets of opportunity. But the rebels are not in contact with the rest of the world through any official channels, and media access is poor.

Gaddafi is looking for a stalemate in the short term.

Meanwhile, the BBC struggles with the concept of area versus length.

I wouldn't mind an iOS-type OS on an iMac as long as it had some more features of a full-fledged desktop OS. As in:

    -Multiple Users
    -Printing
    -Some kind of file system
-More apps of a creative side (ie movie editing, word processing, programming, etc.) instead of just media consuming apps

Note: this list is not exhaustive; there are many more features I'd like that I just can't think of at the moment.

Plus, some games/apps will need to be done, specifically those that need the accelerometers. I don't think people would want to swing around a 20/30 pound computer. But that would be a good way to make more money; people keep breaking them so they'll have to pay for repairs/new ones.

I doubt 10.7 will be such an overhaul. Probably more like Mac OS X 11.0 or a totally new naming scheme.

You just described a touchless OS X. It does exactly that...

That's the same line of thought prior to the MacBook release - everyone thought they would run core solo's in the base model. The Mini could be Merom but like most here I think it will have a Yonah and hopefully go back to the $499 US price point. Personally I'm hoping they will do a MacPro and only have one model with various processor optical drive configs. Say a 1.66GHz Core Duo 512MB RAM 80GB HDD Combo BT AP etc. Then optional 1.83/2.0 Yonah 100/120GB HDD Superdrive etc. That's just me though.

That would be interesting if Apple does go to a more BTO strategy rather than the good, better, best strategy. But I imagine BTO makes the most sense for pros, who know what they want, and good, better, best makes sense for consumers who don't necessarily understand, for instance, the difference between RAM and HD space.

Which anti-war groups picket veteran's funerals? The only group that I'm aware of is the Westboro Christian anti-gay Church.

I don't think it's a group like that church is, but mere people gathering to picket anything military. In Santa Barbara, CA they go up and down the streets with signs saying "oppose the military", "attack a veteran", "praise there death since it's what they deserved", etc.

The prices in CompUSa will be dropped on Friday for what they may actually have in stock. They have been constraining them for the past couple weeks. All I have is the display core duo and one box stock core solo. Alot of the apple employees who work in the CompUSAs had extra days off this week due to the holiday (much needed) so they may not have been back into CUSA to let the staff know.

    Kevin
I think getting a cheaper older model of Mac mini would be great, if the prices were right. It would be a great starter machine for someone that really doesn't care about having the lastest and greatest.

    http://news.com.com/Intel+completes+design+of+Penryn+chip/2100-1006_3-6139487.html

Intel has taped out--or completed the design of--Penryn, a 45-nanometer chip that will be out toward the end of next year.

The company is also in the midst of making its first Penryn samples.

"They aren't out of the fab yet, but they are in the fab," said Mark Bohr, director of process technology at Intel, referring to chip factories, known as "fabs."

Intel showed off a memory chip made on the 45-nanometer process earlier this year.

The Penryn news underscores Intel's expertise in manufacturing. The company has introduced new manufacturing processes every two years. Meanwhile, competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices have had to space out these jumps. Intel started shipping chips made on the 65-nanometer process in October 2005. AMD won't ship its first 65-nano chips until next month.
    ______________________________________________

Disclaimer: The preceding headline exhibits excessive exuberance. In truth,

"No official details concerning the Penryn chip design were announced this time, however, according to previously published news-stories, the chip code-named Penryn is a 45nm incarnation of the dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo processor for mobile computers (code-named Merom) with SSE4 technology..."

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20061127154338.html

But, since Intel has stated that two dual-core dies in a package is the right way to do quad-core at 65nm, which implies that 45 nm is the right way to do quad-core per die, and two quad-cord dies in a package at 45 nm is the right way to do octo-core at 45nm - obviously we'll have a PowerBook G5 next Tuesday.
