Cool. Thanks for contributing something insightful and interesting, MikeELL (unlike some folks--like me).

    Heh. Cheers, mate.

I figure if I had as much R&D funding as NASA (perhaps more), these are the kind of things I'd be looking at.

Off topic, but I wonder if these alloys have the potential to be strong enough to build a space elevator. They're currently at about 1.7GPa, which is about the level of high-tensile steel. 62GPa is required for the space elevator (carbon nanotubes have theoretical potentials of 200+ GPa - but no one can get them more than a few centimetres long so far).

iMovie and FCP X probably do share code. No point in doing the same thing twice.

Then again, Prem Pro and Prem Elements probably do too.

We'll just have to get used to "you're using iMovie Pro" jibes from Avid users. :D

I think Apple blew it with the new iPod Shuffle. They should have kept the old form factor but put in a small LCD display to show song titles and elapsed time.

Then get a nano? Alu exterior, even smaller than before, better battery life, small LCD display...

Unless if you're asking for something like a nano at the price of a shuffle. Then keep dreaming.

No? Why compromise with a bunch of xenophobic racists who have an irrational fear of Muslims?

why be so angry? ... I worked for a Muslim for 3 years ... I would not call it racism because race has more to do with skin color than religious beliefs.

he was of the belief that if you did not worship the prophet Muhammed ... you were just not there. he actually felt sorry for non-Muslims for not believing.

Personally ... I wish people would keep their religious beliefs to themselves. There is no need to spread the word of God, Allah, Muhammed or any other cult of choice.

Either way ... I do not want to derail this thread too far from "the Jewish owning the White House"

I agree with the report in that some cryptographic techniques should have been used to negate the possibility of this. It may be short range and 'almost' useless, but having a live RFID tag in one's shoe that'll respond to just anyone is a bit of a blunder. I think RFID is a great technology, it just needs to be used carefully.

As for the mobile phone arguments - yes a network can triangulate the approximate location of one of its subscribers, but any old Tom, Dick or Harry doesn't have access to this information!

My bad if this is for real, it just sounds so much like the iPhone Antenna issues threads that started last year. I bought in to that whole garbage hook line and sinker at first and there were tons of newbies posting on the problem.

When I finally got to see a few actual iPhone 4's (never bought one since I am still under contract for 3GS) -- I could not replicate the problem. Over the past year I must have tried on about 20 iPhone 4's of friends, many times in areas of really bad coverage and compared it directly with my 3GS -- but no antenna issue could be discerned that was any worse than other smart phones and it consistently out-performed the antenna on my 3GS.

Clearly volume of posts (108,000) does not make the problem real since the iPhone 4 Antenna got more posts than I can count on more threads than I count. But it certainly lends some credence.

I also find it a bit hard to believe that Halebopp has managed to get 3 iPad 2's in the two weeks that they have been out and that he is waiting for the 4th given the production shortages. Unless Halebopp is going down to the Apple Store every morning at 7am and waiting in line for it to open so he can exchange the unit before the stock disappears. Maybe Apple Store is willing to hold one for you if you call the day before and tell them about the problem you are having and that you need an exchange. But I remember when folks where exchanging their 27-inch iMacs that had screen problems that it took quite a while to get replacement units.

So maybe it was/is a bit presumptuous of me to assume that since mine was fine that this was a repeat of that whole Antenna-gate thing. If so then I apologize, and I will reserve my judgement until there are enough iPad 2's out there in circulation for me to test with a dozen or so units of friends.

With regards to whether or not I think folks have the time or desire to post fake problems with regards to Apple products, I believe the answer is "yes" based on what I have seen. Does it mean that is always or usually the case, probably not.

    @ BC2009
I would just like to report that I received iPad #4 last night - no problems, looks beautiful and zero light leakage, also passed the dead or stuck pixel test so I'm very happy. Genius bar and the people at local Apple store were extremely helpful even adding "if you still have any problems in a couple months just bring it back and we'll exchange at that time"

I didn't wait in any lines whatsoever, iPad was ordered online right when they went on sale so I received shipment fairly quickly with iPad #1. It was just good customer service by the "Genius" working for me.

I think it will be bigger leap than you think.
If it is just incremental, they would be on time for another upgrade for June.

The next hardware upgrades as far as processing power are obvious. Economies of scale dictate they are going to use their latest processors across as many product lines as possible (the next iPhone and iPod Touch are as good as guaranteed to have an A5). I think a delay would more likely be attributed to iOS 5, particularly since it doesn't look like there will be a big iOS 5 unveiling at WWDC. I actually hope this is the case. It would indicate significant changes to iOS, and it needs it!

EDIT: As a side note, fingers crossed they bring Core Image support in this version. Graphics hardware is up to the task now.

3D - Meaning the illusion of width, height, and depth.

This has all 3 of those.

Who says the screen has to be at the back of the depth instead of the front? I mean, clearly you do, but why?

Both kinds of 3D imaging have an illusion of depth. Why does the direction of that depth matter?

I saw Tangled in the theaer in 3D. About 10% of the effects 'popped out' at me. The other 90% of the effects seemed to be behind the screen. Did Disney consider Tangled a "10% 3D movie?" I doubt it.

I'm not arguing that this isn't 3D. I'm arguing that this video is deemed as glasses-free.

Domestic truck sales dwarf those of the Japanese, but you have a point. I'm not giving them a "free pass". Perhaps Toyota's increasing concentration on SUVs and the Prius has something to do with their worsening circumstances.

But the fact of the matter remains: the Japanese car manufacturers do not survive solely based on their truck sales - but the Big Three absolutely rely on strong truck sales to stay in business.

Ya i see what you're saying too. I just think far too often the choices made by the buying public are used to fault the automakers. For example, the fact that Ford now sells an excellent, fuel efficient hatchback in the Ford Fiesta doesn't change the fact that, in November for example, 3473 people in the US bought a Fiesta, while 38,541 people decided they needed an F-Series. In this regard, I think it's ridiculous for the government to mandate that a company build a certain number of xx mpg cars, regardless of whether people actually want to buy those cars or not. Instead, the government should create incentives to encourage people to buy more efficient vehicles. You can't blame car companies for building vehicles that satisfy a profitable segment of the market. Unfortunately, GAS TAX is way too scary a concept for any sane politician to touch with a 10-foot pole.

I've been running at 4.2ghz. My volts are very good too at 1.26, I did manage 4.4 @ 1.27v but wasn't stable enough under my current cooling. I upgraded the mobo to an Asus Rampage III Extreme and upgraded the PSU to a TX850 Corsair. I'm getting my old 1600w Ultra X3 replaced with the X4 and will probably run that as I want to add more GPUs to my system, more than likely 2 more 460s.

nice! hey did i hear they released a 460 x2?

Interesting how the 970 @ 4.2 is about 4-5 min faster than the 2600k @ 4.5 on the same WU.

edit: Forgot that it was a hexacore :)

yeah 6 cores make a difference. both are still great. looking forward to the next gen 6 and 8 cores from intel

Great post. Just one thing (or maybe 2?)

I never said I didn't like what Apple has done or that the technology isn't great.

What I was stating is that Apple, along with other companies contribute to the dumbing down of society. And then put themselves in a position to speak down to you (ie today's quote by Steve Jobs) about educating the customer.

I don't pretend to have all the answers. One of my majors was in Speech Communications. There's a lot of validity to professionals using language to subjugate and/or exclude other members of society in conversation. The language doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics, you name it all have their own vocabulary which excludes the average person. This also adds "mystique" and credence to the information they state.

So when I say that Apple and other companies are contributing to the dumbing down of society - I say that without prejudice or judgment - but merely a statement of fact. And pretty incontrovertible at that.

OK, from a rhetoric perspective you have a good point. I was addressing the persepective of our tools, not the way we are spoken to.

I see the dumbing down of society too, and I hate it. As for what Steve said, well, he always did view all of us as either heros or losers, so this way of viewing people is not new with him :)

He didn't say that the Mac Mini was "over priced" just that it was "expansive" there is a difference.

The Mac Mini is not expansive, to have an expandable Mac the suits in Apple decides that you are a "pro" user and adjusts the pricing of your MacOS according... oh, I was referring to the flat 20% margins they have on every single product in their line.

Why does MacOS costs so much more on a Powermac than on a Mini? Beats me!

...only if Apple wanted to go AFTER that market segment... to date they haven't (and for many good reasons).

Indeed, why sell a $399 Mac for what it is worth when you can sell it for $799?

    What

Name 1 corporation that is not greedy...

    And non-profits are not allowed...;)

It is a good deal of greed that separates those who are happy to buy something at $c and sell it at $c + $p from those who decides it is not even worth their while unless $p = 20% * $p...

especially compared to the whopping $400 for Vista Ultimate Edition (now with more branding!).

    That is a riot.

(And my money is on the fact that Vista is not done until SP2, not SP1. They are still fixing this sucker through launch, so they're going to need to patch it fast.

For something like OS re-installs, maybe USB drives. For everything else, downloads, probably. That seems like a logical course of action. But then again, a lot of people don't like to use logic when they make decisions.

well logic is more for music creation, not really general decisions - however you can mix some great inspiring beats to help you make decisions :)
